The North Gate Jazz Bar
Located just inside the old city walls at the north gate, the North Gate Jazz Bar has been one of the most popular places to enjoy live music in Chiang Mai for over a decade now. Attracting locals, expats and tourists alike, it serves a good collection of cheap drinks and offers an excellent space for musicians to experiment. It is best to reach here early as the place gets crowded post 8:30 pm. Exuding a community vibe, it also has open Jazz Jam on Tuesdays where anyone can play. The only downside to this place is that it isn’t a true Thai place as tourists and expats visit it more often than locals.

Roots Rock Reggae
Nicknamed, “The Square of Despair”, Roots Rock Reggae is located inside the Zoe and Yellow complex. Frequented by backpackers, it is famous for beers, cheap shots and buckets of Thai whisky served by Thai rastas. When it comes to music, it is the best place to head out to for something upbeat and local. Thai musicians play reggae, rock and ska music while swaying to the beats. While it comes alive after 10 pm, the best time to visit it is after midnight.

Good View Bar & Restaurant
Though there are multiple bars offering live music, one of the best ones in the city to offer a combination of both good food and music is the Good View Bar & Restaurant. With an extensive menu offering multi-cuisine options of 150-plus items and a unique selection of alcohol and cocktails, it is perfect to enjoy a relaxed night out. With amazing views over the city, the Mae Pin river and Doi Suthep mountain, it has also been aptly named. The restaurant draws a mixed crowd and plays an eclectic combo of blues, jazz, American rock, British pop and Thai country music.

Boys Blues Bar
Situated above the city’s Night bazaar, it is one of the city’s finest live music venues. Known mainly for the owner “Boy”, who is also a revered guitar player, it attracts locals and expats with a mutual appreciation for good music and cold beer. The band completely enjoys themselves and even invites visitors on Mondays jam night to pick up a guitar and join in. Music typically starts at around 8:15 pm with the owner himself playing the second set of the evening.

A relatively new entrant in the live music scene around the city, Thapae east, however, is undoubtedly one of the most diverse venues in town. Just off Thapae road, it showcases a variety of local and foreign music arts every night of the week. It comprises of an open-air lawn area used for events and screenings and rows of shophouses that include restaurants, bars and shops. There is no cover fee and you can simply buy alcohol to enjoy the music and festive vibe of this place. It is most famous for hosting unique concerts with different musical styles every month.
